How to use this calculator
Enter start and end times and explicitly choose whether the end is on the next day. A break is subtracted from the total. Switch between 12-hour time with AM/PM and 24-hour time before entering your times.
The formula
Total minutes = end − start + (next day ? 1,440 : 0). Net minutes = total − break. Decimal hours = net minutes ÷ 60.
A worked example
22:30 to 06:15 on the next day spans 465 minutes, or 7 hours 45 minutes. Subtract a 30-minute break for 435 net minutes: 7 hours 15 minutes, or 7.25 decimal hours.
What to keep in mind
- 24:00 is not a valid time. In 12-hour format, 12:00 AM is midnight and 12:00 PM is noon.
- Equal start and end times mean zero on the same day, or 24 hours when “Ends next day” is selected.
- Breaks must be whole minutes and cannot exceed the total duration. Dates, daylight saving, time zones, and multiple periods are not included.
